Graduated from Princeton University in 1841, then with his law degree from Transylvania University in 1843. Moved to St. Louis where he practiced law. Served in the Missouri legislature from 1852 to 1856. Served in the U.S. House of Representatives 1857-1859, 1861-1862 and 1863-1864. Then appointed to the U.S. Senate to fill an unfinished term serving from January 20, 1871 to March 3, 1873.)
