African American National Biography, accessed February 18, 2014, via Oxford African American Studies Center database (Jarreau, Alwyn Lopez; jazz singer, rhythm and blues musician / singer, popular singer, songwriter; born 12 March 1940 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, United States; received a BS degree in Psychology from Ripon College (1962) and a master's degree in Vocational Rehabilitation from the University of Iowa (1964); relocated to San Francisco and worked as a rehabilitation counselor (1965); formed a jazz-club ensemble, the George Duke Jazz Trio; moved to Minneapolis and formed an eclectic band, Jarreau (1971); his album We Got By was released that year and brought him international acclaim; his double live album, Look to the Rainbow, won him his first Grammy for best jazz vocal performance; All Fly Home won him another Grammy for best jazz vocalist; Breakin' Away won two Grammy awards; Accentuate the Positive (2004), won a Grammy nomination for best jazz vocal album; the album with George Benson, Givin' It Up, received three Grammy nominations and won best traditional R&B performance for "God Bless the Child"; was honored by the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts (2007))
