In January 2020, the Frankfurt-based technology and information provider MVB took on the role of an ISNI RAG operating in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. MVB plans to build a new standardisation service during the first half of 2020. The first step will be to automatically assign an ISNI to all creators listed in the Verzeichnis Lieferbarer Bücher (VLB), the books-in-print catalogue used in the German-speaking world, to the extent that the German National Library has unambiguously identified the relevant creator. This will support publishing houses in classifying existing authors and other contributors.
In a second step, publishers whose books are listed in VLB will be able to register new ISNIs for the creators of their works – directly from the catalogue, and free of charge. As part of the VLB data they receive, retailers are already supplied with any ISNIs previously reported by publishers. Given the automated assignment of ISNIs and the opportunity to register new creators, the number of titles with unique creator identifiers will increase significantly within a short period of time. It is also planned to use ISNIs in the affiliated systems of VLB-TIX and Metabooks.
