Joining ISNI

ISNI is a collaborative venture, supported by a wide range of companies, institutions and organizations. If your organization would like to become more actively involved then two membership options exist – ISNI Members and ISNI Registration Agencies.

ISNI Members have full access to the ISNI database and the tools or facilities that surround it, including batch and API options for search and ISNI assignment. Members may make ISNI assignment requests for their own needs but are not permitted to act on behalf of other customers or clients outside their organization. Some ISNI Members may also be interested in consulting the ISNI database as a reference resource rather than actively contributing information to populate it.

ISNI Registration Agencies also have full access to the ISNI database and the tools or facilities that surround it, including batch and API options for search and ISNI assignment. Registration Agencies are permitted to act on behalf of their own organizations but are also encouraged to offer ISNI assignment and other ISNI-related services to external customers or clients. ISNI Registration Agencies may also, if they wish, charge external customers a reasonable fee for these services so as to defray their own costs and to contribute to the success of their own business models.

ISNI’s non-profit operations are funded in large part by contributions from these two types of member. ISNI membership is on an annual subscription basis, with a tiered fee structure based broadly on the size or revenues of the organization concerned. Fees for Registration Agencies are slightly higher than those for comparably sized Member organizations and full details of both are available on request.

If you are considering becoming an ISNI Member or starting a new ISNI Registration Agency, please email ISNI-IA for further information. To help us understand and process your application swiftly please provide the following:

  • A brief description of your organization

  • Your proposed target market or area of interest (e.g. library, film, music, e-books, etc.)

  • Organizations, territories, regions or linguistic areas where you plan to deploy your services.
